Tiny Catholic girls' school in East L.A. has no gymnasium, forcing basketball players to walk a mile through a gang-infested neighborhood to get to games and practices at a rec center.

The giant black metal gate slams shut, click, locked, leaving the scrubbed faces of the Sacred Heart High basketball players alone with the weathered streets of Lincoln Heights.
